The massacre of Karbala

All praise is due to Allah swt, the lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final prophet and messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

Assalaamu’alaykum.w.w.

Since the beginning of Muharram, I have been thinking to myself that I should study about what happened at the time of Karbala. It must have been a time of acceptance because come a week later, there I was sitting in front of the Madrasah students giving a talk on Karbala. Alhumdulillah! Originally was meant to be in two parts but as I’ve finished both parts I’ve put it into one. Happy reading! 🙂

Through the ages Iraq has seen many massacres. Some of which have been so brutal that rivers of blood flowed through its streets. Of these massacres, the most inhumane took place in the 61st year of Hijri, on Friday the 10th of Muharram.

The story of Karbala in actual fact began on the 12th of Rabi ul awwal, the 11th year of Hijri. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam had been informed that it was time for him to leave this world and so like any other person would do; He sallallahu alayhi wasallam began to say his final goodbyes. He bid farewell to his beloved sahaba, to his loving wives, to his devoted sons in law and his adoring daughters. Yet he did not shed even a drop of tear. Then the time came for him to hold his beloved grandsons, Hasan (rd) and Hussain (rd), for the last time and tears began to flow from the Mubarak eyes of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam because he knew that, one day in the future, his ummah would poison one of them and would behead the other and he could not perceive this for they were a part of him.

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal has related in his Musnad that Once Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was sitting with the angel of rain, Mikaeel (as). Hussain (rd), a small child at the time, was sitting with Umme Salma (rd) and he wanted to go to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. So he ran into the room and began climbing upon the shoulders of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Mikaeel (as) asked, “Oh Rasulullah! Do you love Hussain?” and Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied “Indeed! I love Hussain.” So the Angel said, “Indeed people from your Ummah will kill Hussain. If you wish I will show you that place where they will kill him.” So Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied; “Yes! Show me!” The Angel struck his hand and the land of Karbala opened up and he bought some red soil (about which Umme Salma (rd) mentions; “I used to tie this soil in my scarf”). When Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam saw this land He said “Rehu karb wa bala! From this land I smell karb- difficulty and pain and bala- trials and tribulations.” Hence Karbala was named.

Moving forward to the 60th year of Hijri, before the demise of Muawiyah (rd) he appointed his son, Yazeed, as the next khaleef. Generally a Khaleef is appointed after the demise of the previous one. However, Yazeed was the first to have inherited khilafah. When a khaleef is appointed, he is to be followed as long as he is obedient to the commands of Allah swt and Yazeed was not obedient. As a matter of fact, Yazeed was a drunkard, listened to music and had other bad habits. But before anything could be said to Muawiyah (rd) to change his decision, he passed away. As Yazeed was not submissive, Hussain ibn Ali (rd), the eldest living member of the family of the prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam at the time, was not ready to accept him as a khaleef. Many people began to take allegiance with Yazeed; however a lot felt that Hussain (rd) should be appointed as the new khaleef.

People began sending letters from Kufa to Madinah Munawwarah to Hussain (rd). Kufa is a place that is now part of Iraq. However at the time, it was a garrison which was the main governing seat of Ali (rd) and so many supporters of Ali (rd) still resided in Kufa. According to some narrations they sent 12 000 letters saying “Oh Hussain come to us and we will pledge allegiance to you. We will regard you as the khaleef.”

As so many letters were sent to him, Hussain (rd) sent his cousin Muslim ibn Aqeel ibn Abi Talib (rd) to see what was happening in Kufa. When Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) set out for his journey he hired two guides. On his way, first one guide passed away and then the other and so he did not take this as a positive sign. He sent a letter to Hussain (rd) telling him he had a bad feeling about this journey and so maybe he should not go ahead. But Hussain (rd) told him to carry on because he wanted to find out what the reality of the situation was in Kufa.

Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) reached Kufa and within a couple of days 32 000 people pledged allegiance to Hussain (rd) on the hands of Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd). He wrote a letter to Hussain (rd), who at the time was residing in Makkah Mukarramah, saying “Oh Hussain! Come to Kufa. The people’s hearts are with you.”

The governor at the time in Kufa was a very pious man by the name of Nouman ibn Basheer (rd). A supporter of Yazeed asked him “why do you not do something about this Muslim ibn Aqeel?” But Nouman ibn Basheer (rd) did not wish to be tested through the family of Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wasallam and so he said “I would rather be a coward with the truth than be brave with falsehood.”

When Yazeed learnt through his supporters that Nouman ibn Basheer was not going to take action, he demoted Nouman (rd) and he appointed Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad as the new khaleef in place of him.

Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad entered Kufa with his face covered and the people who were waiting for the arrival of Hussain (rd) thought it was him and they began giving salaam to him saying “Assalaamu’alaykum oh grandson of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam!”

Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad then came to realise how severe the situation was and so he went straight to the governing palace and ordered his people to scout out for the gatherings of Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd). It was then that the people came to know that this person was not in fact Hussain (Rd) but rather someone appointed by Yazeed. Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad sent one of his slaves to keep an eye out for who comes and goes from these gatherings and then report back to him. Amongst these people who gathered was a man by the name Hani, who was the leader of his people.

On the 8th of Zul Hijjah 60 AH, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad summoned him and asked him where Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) was, To which he denied knowledge of such a person. Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad called out his slave and Hani then realised that he could no longer hide the truth and so he said “I swear by Allah, Even if Muslim ibn Aqeel was under my foot I would not reveal him to you.”

On hearing the news that Hani had been captured, Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) marched towards the palace with 4000 men and at the same time, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad gathered the tribal leaders and he offered them close council if they called off their men. So these leaders went out and began to call off their men. That morning when Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) had gathered his men, He had 4000 men. In the afternoon he had 400 men. By Maghrib he only had 30 men and after Maghrib he was left all alone running and hiding in the streets of Kufa like a fugitive because Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad’s men were searching for him.

Whilst hiding he came to a door, he knocked on it and an old lady opened it. He asked her “Do you have water for a traveller?” and she replied in the affirmative and gave him water. He drank the water and then he sat where he was like a tired traveller does after a long day. Seeing him sit down, the lady asked him “why are you sat there? What is wrong?” and he replied “I am Muslim ibn Aqeel”. She asked him “you’re from the family of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam?” he replied “yes” and she felt honoured to be in his presence and so she gave him shelter.

Later that night her son came home and she told him “we are honoured with the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam”. But her son did not feel the same way and so early the next morning on the day of Arafat; he sneaked out of the house, went over to the palace and said “if you give me this amount money I will tell you where Muslim ibn Aqeel is hiding”. So they gave him some money and he told them where he was.

The soldiers went, they surrounded the house and they captured Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd). When they reached the palace, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad ordered his men to take Muslim (rd) and Hani on to the terrace and he said to them “behead both men and then throw their heads over the wall of the palace, so that people know that this will be their outcome if they go against Yazeed the governor”. So on the 9th of Zul Hijjah 60th year of Hijri, Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) along with Hani became shaheed. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon.

Back in Makkah Mukarramah, when the eminent Sahaba (rd) found out that Hussain (rd) was planning on setting out towards Kufa they tried to stop him. They were not trying to stop him because they wanted to go against the Khaleef but rather they were trying to stop him because they knew the treacherous nature of the Iraqis, in particular the Kufans. Abdullah ibn Abbas (rd) said to him “Hussain! Where are you going?! Don’t you remember what these people did to your father and to your brother?” But Hussain (rd) insisted on going. To which Abdullah ibn Abbas (rd) said to him “I swear by Allah! If I could tie a rope around your neck and keep you here in Makkah, I would do so.”

Abdullah ibn Umar (rd) travelled for three days to catch up with him and he asked him “where are you going oh Hussain?!” Hussain rd replied: “Look at the letters they have sent to me! They want to pledge allegiance with me!” Abdullah ibn Umar (rd) was one of the leading scholars of the time. He had great knowledge of the Qur’an and Hadeeth. He replied “Hussain! This can never happen because Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that he is from you and you are from him and Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was given an option of the dunya or the akhirah and he chose the akhirah. So you can never attain the dunya!” but even this did not change Hussain’s (rd) mind and so ibn Umar (rd) asked him to show him the place where Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam used to kiss him. Hussain (rd) lifted his garment and ibn Umar (rd) kissed him in the very same spot and he let him go.

Two days prior to the day of Arafat on the 7th of Zul Hijjah, Hussain (rd) along with his wife, children, Sister Zainub Bint Ali (rd) and others set out from Makkah Mukarramah. On his way he met a well-known poet by the name of Quraltuk and he asked him what the situation was like in Kufa. He replied “Half of the people are with you but all their swords are with Bani Umayah”. But he still carried on towards Kufa.

On the way, he suddenly began to say the takbeer out loud and the people asked “What is wrong oh Hussain?” And he replied “I saw an angel in the form of a rider and he informed me that the army is coming and death awaits you!” and so in shock for the second time they asked “What do you see Oh?! Hussain what do you see?!” and he replied “I have seen the decree of Allah swt”.

Further on, he saw that Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad had sent an army of a 1000 men under the command of Hurr ibn Yazeed. Hurr confronted Hussain (rd) and he said to him “Oh Hussain! Do not make Allah swt test me through the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam”. But Hussain (rd) carried on walking and Hurr began to follow him with his army. So Hussain (rd) in annoyance said to Hurr “May your mother lose you!” and Hurr replied “Oh Hussain! If anyone other than you had said this to me, I would have taken revenge from him and his mother. But what can I say to your mother? She is the leader of the women of the dunya and the akhirah. What can I even say to you?!”

Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad then sent another 4000 men under the command of Umar ibn S’ad. Then another 4000 men under the command of  Shimr. Then another 1000 men under the command of Hussain ibn Mumayid, and lastly, another 1000 men under the command of Muhammad ibn Ash’ath.

Now Hussain (rd) began to realise how severe the situation was because against the 11 000 men of Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad, he in total only had 72 people, of which some were women. 23 of the 72 were from the Ahlul Bayt and about 16 were from the direct family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. He turned to Umar ibn S’ad and he said “Give me one of three options: Either allow me to fight in the path of Allah swt for the rest of my life, or allow me to speak to Yazeed or allow me to go back to Makkah Mukarramah.”

Umar ibn S’ad wrote a letter to Yazeed. Yazeed began agreeing with his conditions. But Shimr, who was present, said to him “No! You cannot agree to any of his conditions because if you do so, it would mean he has won. Instead, tell him to surrender without any conditions and his faith will lie in our hands”. So Yazeed wrote a letter back to Umar ibn S’ad saying that Hussain (rd) must surrender without any conditions.

By the time the letter reached Umar ibn S’ad, a day had passed and Hussain (rd) along with his people had been denied even a sip of water. Umar ibn S’ad read the letter out to Hussain (rd) and Hussain (rd) said to him “Oh ibn S’ad! I swear by Allah, if one of my enemies had asked of me any one of the three, I would have agreed to his condition. Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know I am the son of Ali (rd)? Don’t you know I am the son of Faatimah (rd)? Don’t you know I am the grandson of the prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam? And Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain, whoever hurts Hussain, has hurt me. What will you do on the day of judgement, when you will come to my grandfather and you will ask him to intercede on your behalf and you have done this to me? What do you think my grandfather will do”?

Hurr ibn Yazeed was listening to this and he came to Hussain (rd) and he said “Oh Hussain from now on I am with you!” Then he turned towards the Kufans and he said to them; “What kind of people are you? You wrote letter upon letter to him and when he came to help you, you deceived him! Then you deprive him of water, even though there is a river nearby which the dogs and pigs drink from. Which the Christians and the Jews drink from. Yet you stop water from reaching the family of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. What kind of people are you?!”

For three more days they refused to give him water and on this third day Hussain (rd) came out of his tent, he sat down, he took off his sword, he fell asleep and he saw a dream. He only woke up when he heard the screams of his sister, Zainub bint Ali (rd).

She came running and screaming because the enemy was advancing and so Hussain (rd) told his brother to go and ask them for one more day to think over things. Abbas ibn Ali (rd) went and asked and they gave them one more day.

Hussain (rd) then gathered his men and he said; “Oh people! Know that the only man they want is me. So why don’t you all go back and leave me?” They replied; “Oh Hussain! There is no life for us after you.”

Seeing as he was not getting anywhere with his people, Hussain (rd) then turned to the family of Muslim ibn Aqeel (rd) and he said “Oh Muslim! Your family has given your sacrifice! Muslim has been martyred so why don’t you go back?” (He said this because by this time news had reached them that Muslim (rd) had been martyred). They replied; “Oh Hussain! What will people say? That you left your leader! You left your cousin because you wanted to live in this dunya? We swear by Allah! This can never happen. We will die with you! We will give our lives. We will give our families and we will give our wealth for you and if it means we dying with you, then we will die with you”.

Seeing as even in this case he was not getting anywhere, Hussain (rd) then explained; “The reason I asked for one more night was not because I was going to join falsehood. But rather when I went to sleep outside my tent, I saw my grandfather, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, in my dream. He said to me; “Oh Hussain! Get ready to come to me” and the other reason I took one more night was because I wanted to stand in front of my lord, to cry to my lord and to repent to my lord. This is the only reason I took one more night. Otherwise if it was to join with falsehood, remember that the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam can never join with Falsehood.”

Hussain (rd) then spent the entire night standing the court of Allah swt, crying to him and he recited poetry. He said:

“Oh time! What an awful friend you are!

For all those who have pursued you, you have killed them by day and night.

And we have all attained your targets, and all matters will return to Allah swt.

And every person who is living will walk my path”.

His sister listening to this began to cry and so he said “Oh Zainub! Do not let Shaytaan get the better of you! I swear by Allah, my mother was better than me and she died. My brother was better than me and he died. My father was better than me and he died and my grandfather, the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam was better than me and he died. So I will tell you that you and I will leave this dunya and so don’t let Shaytaan get the better of you.”

The next day, Friday 10th of Muharram, Hussain (rd) came out with his men and the Kufans also came forward. As was the tradition of the time, first a one on one duel took place amongst the chosen men. So the Kufans sent forward their men and Hussain (rd) himself came forward and took out each one of them single handed. The Kufans then realised that if this carried on, they would be left with no men and so 3000 men attacked the small army of Hussain (rd) all at once.

The first to fall from the men of Hussain (rd) was Muslim ibn Awsij (r). Hussain (rd) called out to him “Oh Muslim! Glad tidings unto you, for you are the first to fall for the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam”. Then Habeeb ibn Mutahhir moved forward and called out “Glad tidings unto you, Oh Muslim! Glad Tiding unto you, Oh Muslim! You are guaranteed Jannah for falling for the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam”. Then Muslim (r) turned to Habeeb (r) and he said “Oh Habeeb! Don’t die after Hussain. Die before him. Die Protecting Hussain”! Amongst the men, Sa’eed ibn Abdullah (r) said to Hussain (rd) “Oh Hussain! If I had a thousand lives, I swear by Allah, I would give each one for you. But I have only one life and this I will give up for you.”

One by one, all the men around Hussain (rd) fell. The only men standing were the family of Hussain (rd). The time for zuhr came and so Hussain (rd) said “At Least let us read Zuhr!” So Shimr answered saying “Your Salaah won’t be accepted.” Hussain (rd) replied saying “I see. So the salaah of the household of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam won’t be accepted but yours will be?” and then Hussain (rd) along with his men, read his Salaah by gesture on the battle field.

After reading Salaah from amongst the remaining soldiers, the first to come forward was the eldest son of Hussain (rd), Ali Al-Akbar (r), who was at the time 19 years old. Just like his grandfather Ali (rd), He fought like a lion until they cut off his hands and struck him. When he was breathing his last, his father took him into his arms and said to him “Oh my son! On the day of judgement your grandfather, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, will bare witness to your shahadah”. Then when Ali Al-Akbar breathed his last in his father’s arms, Hussain (rd) picked him up and put him with the rest of the martyred.

Then the cousins of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam came forward and fought until all four of them were martyred. Thereafter Qasim ibn Hasan (r) came forward and fought until they hit him over the head and he called out to his uncle Hussain (rd). Hussain (rd) came to him and said “Oh my son! Today your uncle is so injured that he cannot reply to your plea of help because his enemies are many and his friends are few. But I swear by Allah, after today you will not feel the need to call upon anyone”. This moment was so touching that for a moment there was a total standstill in the battlefield.

Thereafter his brothers become shaheed. First to go was Abbas (r). Then Abu Bakr (r), Uthmaan (r), Abdullah (r)and Ja’far (r). Then the sons of Ja’far (r) became shaheed. First to be martyred was Aun (r) and then Muhammad (r). Then Hasan (rd)’s second son Abu Bakr (r) became shaheed.

Thereafter the rest of the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam were martyred except for Hussain (rd) and the first to attack him was Malik ibn Basheer. He struck Hussain (rd) on his helmet and blood began to gush out. So Hussain (rd) removed his helmet and wore a turban instead to stop the bleeding.

He fought as bravely as the men of his family. But for so many days he had not had any water to drink and so he was thirsty and tired. He retreated to his camp and called his youngest son Abdullah who was still being breastfed. Knowing his final moments were near, he took his son into his arms and he began to hug him and kiss him and one of the Kufans by the name of Harmala bin Kamil shot an arrow and it hit Abdullah straight  in the neck and thus the last of the lineage of Hussain (rd) was martyred.

This moment is a great lesson for all who wish to listen. Look at the sabr of Hussain (rd). He laid his son on the ground; he collected the blood in his palms, lifted his hands towards the heavens and cried out “Oh Allah! Give us patience over your decree! Oh Allah! Give us patience over your decree! Oh Allah! Give us patience over your decree”! And in another narration it has been mentioned that he said “Oh Allah! If this is your decree then we accept it. If your help has stopped coming we accept it. But don’t let these oppressors get away with what they have done!” Even in his time of distress, he turns to the one who seals all fates.

Then a small child came running out of the camps and a soldier by the name of Hani ibn Katheer began to attack. Someone tried to stop him saying “He’s just a child. What is he going to do?” But even this did not stop him. He took hold of the child, laid him on the ground and cut off his head as if he was sacrificing an animal.

One of the Kufans thus mentioned “I have never seen a man fight as bravely as Hussain (rd)! For bodies of his family and friends were lying all around him but he was sitting there as content as any man could be!” But really what did this Kufan expect! For this Hussain was no ordinary man! What was to be expected of the son of Ali (rd), the grandson of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, the brother of Hasan (rd), the nephew of Hamzah (rd)! This man was destined for Jannah and Jannah was his only goal.

Hussain (rd) then stood up and he started walking towards the river nearby to try and at least drink some water. But Hussain (with a ص) ibn Yazeed shot an arrow and it hit Hussain (rd) on the chin. He again filled his palms with his own blood this time and turned towards the heavens. Then he said “Oh Allah! I am weak but you are strong. Don’t leave any one of them alive. Destroy them one by one. Take my revenge through your own will.”

He had only just finished making Du’aa and Hussain ibn Yazeed began to feel thirsty. He asked for water and water was given to him. He drank but still wanted more, so they gave him cooled milk. He drank the milk but still kept asking for more till the point that he drank so much milk, his stomach burst and he died a painful death. Thus Hussain (rd) was shown before he was martyred that he should not grieve because Allah swt was with him.

Here was Hussain (rd) left on his own to fight and everywhere he’d turn, a group of men would run after him (because these men were too cowardly to attack on their own) until Shimr said “What are you waiting for? Finish him off!”

Just imagine yourselves on the battlefield for a second and think about what the scene must be like. There, in front of the women of the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. In front of the wife, sister and daughter of Hussain (rd), like vultures upon dead meat, they struck him around 60 times and even this was not enough for them! A man by the name of Zur’aa bin Saree’ from the tribe of Tamim came and struck Hussain (rd) on the shoulder. He fell to his knees and Khoula bin Sanan ibn Abi Anas threw a spear and Hussain (rd) fell to the floor completely. Then he grabbed Hussain (rd)’s head and severed it from his body and he gave the head to Khoula bin Yazeed. Then they severed the head of all the men who fought with Hussain (rd) and then they left. How unfortunate must these men be that Allah swt did not even give them the ability to bury the martyred?!

They then took the womenfolk of Hussain (rd) as captives. His sister Zainub bint Ali (r) turned around and all she could see was the bodies of their menfolk, of whom every single one had their heads severed from their bodies and she saw these bloodthirsty men take ten horses to trample over the body of the man for whom Allah’s Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam stopped the khutbah, just so he could bring him and his brother forward. Then they took Hussain (rd)’s head, stuck it on a pole and held it up high. Thus, on Friday the 10th of Muharram, the grandson of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, Hussain ibn Ali (rd) became shaheed. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon.

Upon seeing this scene, Zainub bint Ali (r) cried out “Oh my grandfather, the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam, oh my grandfather, May the mercy of Allah swt be upon you. May the angels of the sky send salutations upon you. This is Hussain lying on the battlefield. Today his shroud and his clothes are bloodied and his limbs have been cut and he has been trampled over. Oh my grandfather! Today your granddaughters have become captives and your progeny has been killed!” One of the Kufans mentioned that this scene was so emotional that even the soldiers lost control upon hearing this and began to cry.

The people of Bani Asad then came. They prayed janaazah salaah and they buried the bodies. When Umar ibn S’ad found out they had been buried, he sent water over to the burial site and had it sprinkled over the graves for 40 days until there was no sign of any graves left.

But this was the land of Karbala! Did these men expect it to be forgotten if no signs of the graves were left? Sometime after the soil had dried, a Bedouins came to Karbala. He began to smell the soil and he came to a part of the land where the smell so strong that he began to sneeze. It was so beautiful he had never smelt anything like that before and he said “This is the place where Hussain (rd) is buried.” Subhanallah! They Planned but Allah swt also planned.

The head of Hussain (rd) was then paraded through the streets of the city and then in the markets of Kufa and the Kufans then took the severed head to Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad, who upon seeing it was left in so much awe by its beauty that even he exclaimed; “What beauty!” Anas bin Malik (rd) was standing there and so stated “There was no one who resembled Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam more than Hussain (rd)”. Hussain (rd) resembled Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam so much that after he had passed away when the sahaba (rd) missed Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, they would go to the house of Ali (rd) and look at Hussain (rd).

Then Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad took a cane and hit the mouth of Hussain (rd) and Zaid ibn Arkam (rd) said “Remove that cane, for I swear by Allah, I saw Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam kiss those lips.”

Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad then sent the head of Hussain (rd) to Yazeed in Damascus, who took a sword and hit Hussain (rd)’s lips and Abu Darda Aslami said to him “Oh Oppressor! Remove that sword for I saw Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam’s lips on those lips.” According to some narrations Yazeed sent the head to Madinah Munawwarah with the womenfolk when he released them and there they buried the head with Faatimah (rd).

Thus in the 61st year of Hijri, Friday 10th of Muharram, alongside Hussain bin Ali (rd), Abu Bakr bin Ali (r), Uthmaan bin Ali (r), Abbas bin Ali (r), Abdullah bin Ali (r), Ali Al-akbar (r), Ali Al-Asghar (r), Abdullah ibn Hussain (r), Qasim bin Hasan (r), Abu Bakr bin Hasan (r), Abdullah bin Hasan (r), Aun bin Abdullah bin Ja’far (r), Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ja’far (r), Adi bin Abdullah bin Ja’far (r), Abdullah bin Muslim (r), Abdur-Rahman bin Muslim (r), Uthmaan bin Aqeel (r), Yahya bin Aqeel (r) and Ja’far bin Aqeel (r) of the Ahlul-Bayt were martyred. Their heads, just like Hussain (rd), were severed from their bodies and they are buried in the land of Karbala.

Those who took part in harming the family of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam did not die an easy death. Moving forwarded to the 66th year of Hijri, the new appointed governor of Kufa was Mukhtar ibn Abu Abdillah. He gathered all the men who took part in the battle against Hussain (rd) and he executed each and every one of them, severing their heads from their bodies.

It has been narrated that dogs dragged the body of Shimr through the streets of Kufa. Imam Tirmidhi (r) narrates in his Jami’ that when Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad was beheaded, they took his head to the Masjid. A huge serpent came out and went into the head of Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad. It remained in there for a time and then it appeared and then disappeared and then appeared again. Each time the head beckoned saying “come again, come again” and it disappeared into the head again. This happened around two to three times before it finally disappeared completely.

Imam Zahabi narrates in one of his books that one of the travellers said he went to Kufa and he stayed at a certain person’s house. The traveller said to the host that all those who took part against Hussain (rd) died a treacherous death. The host replied “You’re lying because I am one of them and nothing happened to me!” That evening he went to straighten a lantern and his fingers got stuck on the lantern. So he tried to blow the lantern out and his beard caught on fire. He managed to find water and jumped into it, however he was still burnt like a charcoal.

This day, the 10th of Muharram, even before the coming of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, held a lot of importance because it was on this day that Allah swt accepted the repentance of Adam (as). It was on this day that the ark of Nuh (as) stopped on mount Judi. It was on this day that Yunus (as) came out of the belly of the whale. It was on this day that Musa (as) crossed the ocean with the Bani Isra’eel. It was on this day that Ibraheem (as) came out of fire that he was thrown into. Then the greatest event that took place on this day was the martyrdom of Hussain (rd) and this event took over in beauty over the rest of the events and after this another great event which is yet to come is yawmul Qiyamah, which will also take place on the 10th of Muharram on the day of Friday.

Apart from being one of the greatest sorrows that beheld the Ummah for even just a moment, this day holds a great lesson for every believer. As evident from the above event taht took place, sometimes, sacrifices, no matter how great, have to be made in order to please Allah swt and his Rasool-e-Kareem sallallahu alayhi wasallam and one must stay strong against disbelief because no amount of leniency will ever make ones Akhirah. Hussain (rd) knew this and even though he was from amongst those who were given the glad tidings of being one of the leaders of the youth of Jannah, he still fought for what was right.

He was sacrificed in order for the believing men and the believing women to realize that this Dunya is temporary and the real abode is the Akhirah. The days leading to his final moments were made a lesson for people to know that Allah swt sometimes puts people through great trials and tribulations in order to gain higher statuses in Jannah!

The 10th of Muharram should not be a mourning day for any person because Hussain (rd) is not a person we should be feeling sorry for. In fact the people we should worry about and feel sorry for, is our own selves because we have no clue as to whether we will be amongst the dwellers of Jannah or Jahannam.

Hussain (rd)’s abode was Jannah and he knew this. Yet to him, pleasing Allah swt was still so important that even when he was in troubled waters he turned to Allah swt. He remembered Allah swt, he prayed to him and so such is his honour in the court of Allah swt that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam himself will bare witness to his shahadah.

Abdullah ibn Abbas (rd) says “The day Hussain (rd) passed away; I saw Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam in a dream. He had dirty clothing and he had a glass full of blood in his hand. So I asked him, “Oh Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam! Where have you come from?” And He replied “I have come from witnessing the martyrdom of Hussain (rd). On the day of judgement, I will give witness to the martyrdom of Hussain (rd).”

May Allah swt deal with the people who finished the progeny of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam as they deserve and May He help us to strive for Jannah and May we all meet there! Ameen.

All praise is to Allah swt at the beginning and at the end.

May you be rewarded for visiting my page and may we all benefit. Ameen.

The Katibah.
