Loving the messenger of Allah ﷺ

All praise is due to Allah ﷻ, Lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final prophet and messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.

Sayyidina Anas (rd) narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ said, “He who loves my Sunnah truly loves me, and the one who loves me will be with me in paradise.” – Sirat, Vol 1, pg. 426

If today someone were to ask us if we love Rasulullah ﷺ, our spontaneous answer will be yes. However, have we once pondered over what truly loving Rasulullah ﷺ means? Is it simply reading about his life’s work? Or learning about his inner character and mannerism? Was every aspect of Rasulullah ﷺ’s life documented and made accessible to us through the ahaadeeth just so that we can skim through it as we do a magazine?

No! Through the companions, Allah ﷻ granted us with the ability to learn about Rasulullah ﷺ so that we may learn to develop that love and grow it. Adherence to the Sunnah is a symbol of true love for Rasulullah ﷺ. Those who claim to be lovers of Rasulullah ﷺ, but do not adhere to the Sunnah are untrue to their claim. A true lover is generally aware of the circumstances and conditions of his beloved and wishes to be like him.

Of course, this does not mean that in learning to follow the Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ, we will become exactly like the companions (rd). There is much difference between the companions (rd) and us. The privilege they had was because they were able to do what we could not.

However, Rasulullah ﷺ’s way of life has been made accessible to us through many means so that we can cultivate the type of love that Abu Bakr (rd) had for Rasulullah ﷺ.

After the conquest of Makkah, Abu Bakr (rd) took his father Abu Quhafa (rd) to Rasulullah ﷺ to accept Islam. Abu Bakr (rd) told Rasulullah ﷺ upon entering the tent, “Oh Rasulullah ﷺ, this is my father, he has come to accept Islaam”. Rasulullah ﷺ replied, “Oh Abu Bakr! If you had informed us that it was your father, we would have come to you”. But Abu Bakr (rd) replied, “Oh Rasulullah ﷺ! It is not befitting that you come to any one let alone my father”.

Thereafter Abu Bakr (rd) placed his father’s hand into Rasulullah ﷺ’s hand to accept Islaam and began crying. Rasulullah ﷺ realised that Abu Bakr (rd) was crying out of sorrow. He asked, “Oh Abu Bakr! What makes you cry? You should be over joyed that your father is accepting Islaam!! Abu Bakr (rd) replied, “Oh Rasulullah ﷺ! Your uncle, Abu Talib, has come to my mind and I swear by Allah ﷻ, the only reason why I am crying is that I would rather have Abu Talib accepting Islam on your hands than my father because I know you will become happier by that. Allah ﷻ will give you a sense of contentment being happy because your uncle strived so much for you but was deprived of Imaan. If he had accepted Islaam, you would’ve been overjoyed by that and so I am crying that if only Allah ﷻ had in place of my father’s Imaan, your uncle would’ve accepted Islam in his place.”

That is the level of affection the companions (rd) had for Rasulullah ﷺ. So much love that they would rather someone closer to Rasulullah ﷺ accept Islaam than their own kin. They would rather their own kin enter the hell-fire in place. Subhanallah! It is so unimaginable that we cannot even put it into prospective.

Allah ﷻ mentions in Surah Ale Imran,

“Say, [O Muhammad], If you love Allah ﷻ, follow me; Allah ﷻ will love you and forgive for you your sins and Allah ﷻ is most forgiving, most merciful.” – 3.31

Hence, we learn from the verse that it is essential for a believer to love Rasulullah ﷺ because gaining the pleasure of Allah ﷻ and loving Rasulullah ﷺ are inseparable.

Then again in Surah Tawbah, Allah ﷻ says,

Say, [O Muhammad ﷺ], “If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased, are more beloved to you than Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah ﷻ executes His command. And Allah ﷻ does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.” -9.24

Looking at verse, we see that Allah ﷻ mentions every subject that a human heart develops love for and then Allah ﷻ says if these things become more beloved to the human heart then we should “wait until Allah ﷻ executes His command”. Many commentators of the Qur’aan say that this refers to Allah ﷻ’s punishment and this can come in many forms of which one is the loss of something we love.

There are certain things that we have natural love for, like our children and there are certain things that we develop love for, like our businesses. However, if the love of these things become greater than the love of Allah ﷻ, His messenger ﷺ and striving in His path, then we should wait for the punishment of Allah ﷻ.

The question arises, when should we wait for the punishment to come? In answer to this, we must first understand the levels of Imaan.

The first is the lesser degree of Imaan in which you have love for something which conflicts with the love of Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ. However, the minute that this begins to effect the rights of Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ, then the punishment of Allah ﷻ which He mentions in His Qur’aan should be expected.

The second degree is the higher level of Imaan in which you aspire to develop your love for Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ to such an extent that it supersedes all the things that the human has no control over loving and it supersedes the thing that the human can grow love for in his heart as well.

The affections that are naturally embedded in the heart, are worked on so much that eventually the love of Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ begin to succeed over everything else.

As mentioned by Rasulullah ﷺ in a hadeeth,

“None of you will have faith until he loves me more than his father, his children and all of mankind.” – Bukhari

This greater love for Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ is not possible without studying the life of Rasulullah ﷺ. If we strive to learn about Rasulullah ﷺ, we will learn that Allah ﷻ moulded him in such perfection that we will fall in love with him and if a study of his ﷺ’s life does not change us, then we should bear in mind that the imperfection is on our part and not his ﷺ.

Lost Sunnah Series- Ramadhan2016

All praise is due to Allah swt, Lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final prophet and messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam. 

Subhanallah! How time has flown. Ramadhan is already departing. It feels like it only came yesterday. I pray we have all tried to at least fulfil some of its rights and Allah swt accepts its from all of us. Ameen. 

I also pray you have benefitted from the #LostSunnah series by DesignsbyMercy as much as I have, Insha Allah. Whoever they are, May Allah swt accept from them, give them barakah in this life and in the hereafter and May their sharing the Sunnah be a sign of acceptance in the sight of Allah swt. 

I have Alhumdulillah, compiled the whole series into one post for easy access/use.

Also, a gentle reminder that Ramadhan maybe over for this year but being a Muslim is not. The Sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alyhi wasallam are not just for Ramadhan, they are for life. 

Practice upon them and the Qur’aan and we shall Insha Allah never go astray.

Pray. Believe. Wait.

All praise is due to Allah ﷻ, Lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final prophet and messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.

Often when a person is in distress, he loses hope in Allah ﷻ. He believes the doors to freedom are closed on him and he has no way out of the situation at hand. He will extend his hands towards the people and turn to Allah ﷻ as a last and hopeless resort. But the situation for a believing man or a believing woman should be different.

In a Hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Umar RA, Rasulullah ﷺ once related a story to the Sahaba RA. He ﷺ said, “Three persons of a people before you, were on a journey when they were overtaken by a storm and therefore they took shelter in a cave. A rock slipped down from the mountain and blocked the exit of the cave. One of them said: “The only way for escape left is to beseech Allah ﷻ in the name of some virtuous deed.” Thereupon one of them supplicated, “O Allah! My parents were very old; I used to offer them their nightly drink of milk before my children and the other members of the family. One day I went astray far away in search of green trees and could return only after my parent had gone to sleep. When I had milked the animals and brought their nightly drink to them, they were fast asleep, but I did not like to disturb them, nor would I give any part of the milk to my children and other members of the family till after my parents had their drink. Thus, with the vessel in hand, I awaited their awakening till the flush of dawn, while the children cried out of hunger at my feet. When they woke up, they had their drink. O Allah! If You regard that I did it for Your sake, then please remove this rock so that we may see the sky.’ Thereupon, the rock moved a little but not enough to let them pass out.

Then the second man supplicated: “O Allah, I had a cousin whom I loved more passionately than anyone loves a woman. I tried to seduce her but she would have none of me. Until in a season of great hardship due to a famine, she approached me (for help) and I gave her one hundred and twenty Dinars on condition that she would have intercourse with me. She agreed. When we got together and I was just going to have intercourse with her, she pleaded: ‘Fear Allah ﷻ and do not break the seal unlawfully’; whereupon I moved away from her, despite the fact that I desired her most passionately; and I let her keep the money I had given her. O Allah, if I did this seeking only your pleasure, then remove the distress in which we find ourselves.” Again the rock moved a little but not enough to let them pass out.

Then the third supplicated: “O Allah!, I hired some labourers and paid them their dues, but one of them left leaving behind what was due to him. I invested it in business and the business prospered greatly.” After a time, the labourer came back, and said: ‘O servant of Allah! Hand over to me my wages.’ I said to him: ‘All that you see is yours – camels, cattle, goats and slaves.’ He said: ‘Don’t play joke with me, O servant of Allah.’ I assured him: ‘I am not joking.’ So he took all of it, sparing nothing. O Allah, if I did this seeking only your pleasure, then relieve us of our distress.”

The rock then moved away, and all the three came out of the cave safe and sound.

(Saheeh al Bukhari).

The greatest lesson taught in this Hadeeth is that Allah ﷻ has power over all things. He afflicts his servants with hardship in good times and in bad times, so that He may test their patience and gratefulness; and so that He may show His servants, His signs and His powers. Why? Because we humans often need signs for the renewal of our faith, to turn back to Allah ﷻ.

In the Qur’aan-e-Kareem, Allah ﷻ says:

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad ﷺ], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. (2:186)

Similarly in a Hadeeth Rasulullah ﷺ said to Ibn Abbas RA;

‘When you ask, ask Allah ﷻ and when you need help, seek help from Allah ﷻ.’

(Narrated in Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Abid-dunya)

From the Quraanic ayah we come to know that Allah ﷻ is ever-near and responsive. He hears the call of the caller wherever they maybe and answers it as and when he wills. Our Prayers may be invisible to us but through them, Allah ﷻ turns hardship into ease, impossible into possible and uncertainty into certainty. Thus the Second lesson we learn is in times of hardship and adversity a believer should turn to Allah ﷻ and ask from Him alone.

Moreover, this Hadith proves that doing good deeds is a way of simplifying matters, warding off harm and relieving hardships. So we should do our utmost best in doing as many good deeds as possible because this Hadeeth teaches that when a believer is in trouble, He should call upon Allah ﷻ, turn to Him and ask Him by virtue of his good deeds. These good deeds could be anything such as believing in the oneness of Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ.

Through such du’aas Allah ﷻ out of His kindness and mercy, answers the supplication of the troubled, shows sympathy to His believing servants, and responds to their pleas.

Furthermore, this hadeeth is clear proof of the ayah;

And your Lord says, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you… (40:60)

Then further on Allah ﷻ says:

Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil… (27:62)

Those three men were troubled as a great hardship had befallen them. They supplicated to Allah ﷻ by virtue of their good deeds and He responded to their prayers and removed their hardship.

Lastly, we learn from the Hadith that being dutiful to one’s parents, abstaining from committing adultery, warning others against it, returning one’s trust and being sincere in actions is virtuous and a way of removing harm and hardship.

The Prophet ﷺ narrated this story because of the importance of it to his nation to benefit from it and learn good deeds from those who were before them.

To conclude, all we need to remember from everything we have learnt is that we, only need to ask. It is through Allah’s ﷻ power alone that we are blessed. But in order to be blessed we must Pray, believe and wait.

Will this Hajj of mine be accepted?

All praise is due to Allah ﷻ, Lord of the worlds and May his peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.

“Hey! Guess what? I’m going for Hajj!” Khadijah exclaimed. “O. M. G! You are so lucky! Keep me in your du’aas and have lots of fun!” Ruqayyah said with a tinge of envy. “Of course! I’m going to have Kudu’s, HALAAL McDonalds, KFC, Baskin Robbins and the list goes on and on. I just can’t wait!”

This little conversation may sound familiar to you. It is almost on the lips of every young person travelling for the holy pilgrimage to the house of Allah ﷻ.

The invitation to the Ka’bah (house of Allah ﷻ) is only granted to a few chosen ones. A special kind of invitation from the Lord of the worlds, Allah ﷻ. He calls to His house whom He wills and grants them permission to join millions in worshipping Him and gaining closeness to Him. How fortunate are such people?!

Despite the many sins committed and the neglect of the most merciful Lord, Allah ﷻ still chooses them to come and worship Him. To come, change and gain closeness to Him. To come and become a better person. He opens His doors so that they may come to Him and submit themselves to Him. Yes! For that one Hajj, these people are the chosen ones.

Yet sadly, most do not realise how fortunate they are to be granted such an opportunity. To them this is a time to worship Allah ﷻ and then come back to reality which is to go on with life as if the time spent in worshipping Allah ﷻ was just a dream.

The holy pilgrimage is NOT a season of piety. The preparation for it is the same as one would prepare for a job interview. For every spare minute that the interviewee finds, he or she will study and research for the job at hand in order to succeed. They will try their utmost best so that the interviewer is impressed. In the same way, the spiritual preparation of going for Hajj is to start the change within yourself beforehand. Knowing that you are going to the house of Allah ﷻ, where you are invited as a guest, to please Him. It is a continuous process of building and strengthening one’s Imaan (faith).

It is not just about completing one of the Faraa’idh (Obligations) of the five pillars of Islaam because one has the means to do so.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said:

“Whoever performs Hajj for the Pleasure of Allah and therein utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it (free from sin) as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.”

(Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)

From the Hadeeth above, we understand that the Hajj should be performed solely for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. It should not be done for show nor for a title. It should be performed in such a manner that one leaves from the house of Allah ﷻ free of sin.

Lastly, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said:

“Verily there shall be no reward for a Mabroor (Accepted) Hajj except Jannah.”

(Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)

This hadeeth begs the question, what is an “accepted Hajj”? Is it to have gone to Makkah and Madinah and completed your Hajj? Or is it to have gone for the holy pilgrimage and come back with the “Haji” title?

As you may have very well guessed, the answer is none of the above. The signs of an accepted Hajj are in the manner of one’s speech, in their dress code, in their times of worship, in their behaviour towards others, in their daily routine, in their acts of Sunnah, in their recitation of the holy Qur’aan, above all in the acceptance of the commandments of Allah ﷻ.

So, in conclusion, this holy pilgrimage will be accepted in the sight of Allah ﷻ when one returns from Hajj and has changed their life around. They are inclined towards good and refrain from evil. Their life becomes filled with taqwah (fear of Allah ﷻ) and gratitude towards Allah ﷻ. Their dress code changes in accordance to the Shari’ah (Islamic law). They become punctual in their Salaah and reciting the holy Qur’aan. They adopt the Sunnah as the way of life. They worry more about their hereafter than their worldly status. They fulfil the rights of the Creator and the creation. They live their life in accordance to the kalimah, La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah and this is what ultimately will lead a believer into Jannah, Insha Allah.

I pray that Allah ﷻ accepts the Hajj of all the pilgrims and may He bless them and make their spiritual journey a fruitful one. Ameen.

The people of the past encouraged the sunnah and the people of the present discourage the sunnah. Then they wonder why their prayers are not accepted. :/

Yet again you reap what you sow!

It greatly saddens me to post this. 😦

Allah the almighty says in the glorious quraan:

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.” [17:23]

Subhanallah! How beautifully Allah swt honours the parents.  He puts them straight after His worship! Yet how easily we dishonour them. They reach old age and we send them in to care homes.

Then carrying on from the Quraanic verse above, Allah the almighty says: “And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: “My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small.” [17:23]

We ask Allah swt to show them mercy as they did us, yet we ourselves who they bought up, we show no mercy to them!

How unfortunate we are! How unfortunate we are! 😦
