Pray. Believe. Wait.

All praise is due to Allah ﷻ, Lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final prophet and messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.

Often when a person is in distress, he loses hope in Allah ﷻ. He believes the doors to freedom are closed on him and he has no way out of the situation at hand. He will extend his hands towards the people and turn to Allah ﷻ as a last and hopeless resort. But the situation for a believing man or a believing woman should be different.

In a Hadeeth narrated by Ibn ‘Umar RA, Rasulullah ﷺ once related a story to the Sahaba RA. He ﷺ said, “Three persons of a people before you, were on a journey when they were overtaken by a storm and therefore they took shelter in a cave. A rock slipped down from the mountain and blocked the exit of the cave. One of them said: “The only way for escape left is to beseech Allah ﷻ in the name of some virtuous deed.” Thereupon one of them supplicated, “O Allah! My parents were very old; I used to offer them their nightly drink of milk before my children and the other members of the family. One day I went astray far away in search of green trees and could return only after my parent had gone to sleep. When I had milked the animals and brought their nightly drink to them, they were fast asleep, but I did not like to disturb them, nor would I give any part of the milk to my children and other members of the family till after my parents had their drink. Thus, with the vessel in hand, I awaited their awakening till the flush of dawn, while the children cried out of hunger at my feet. When they woke up, they had their drink. O Allah! If You regard that I did it for Your sake, then please remove this rock so that we may see the sky.’ Thereupon, the rock moved a little but not enough to let them pass out.

Then the second man supplicated: “O Allah, I had a cousin whom I loved more passionately than anyone loves a woman. I tried to seduce her but she would have none of me. Until in a season of great hardship due to a famine, she approached me (for help) and I gave her one hundred and twenty Dinars on condition that she would have intercourse with me. She agreed. When we got together and I was just going to have intercourse with her, she pleaded: ‘Fear Allah ﷻ and do not break the seal unlawfully’; whereupon I moved away from her, despite the fact that I desired her most passionately; and I let her keep the money I had given her. O Allah, if I did this seeking only your pleasure, then remove the distress in which we find ourselves.” Again the rock moved a little but not enough to let them pass out.

Then the third supplicated: “O Allah!, I hired some labourers and paid them their dues, but one of them left leaving behind what was due to him. I invested it in business and the business prospered greatly.” After a time, the labourer came back, and said: ‘O servant of Allah! Hand over to me my wages.’ I said to him: ‘All that you see is yours – camels, cattle, goats and slaves.’ He said: ‘Don’t play joke with me, O servant of Allah.’ I assured him: ‘I am not joking.’ So he took all of it, sparing nothing. O Allah, if I did this seeking only your pleasure, then relieve us of our distress.”

The rock then moved away, and all the three came out of the cave safe and sound.

The greatest lesson taught in this Hadeeth is that Allah ﷻ has power over all things. He afflicts his servants with hardship in good times and in bad times, so that He may test their patience and gratefulness; and so that He may show His servants, His signs and His powers. Why? Because we humans often need signs for the renewal of our faith, to turn back to Allah ﷻ.

In the Qur’aan-e-Kareem, Allah ﷻ says:

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad ﷺ], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. (2:186)

Similarly in a Hadeeth Rasulullah ﷺ said to Ibn Abbas RA;

‘When you ask, ask Allah ﷻ and when you need help, seek help from Allah ﷻ.’

(Narrated in Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Abid-dunya)

From the Quraanic ayah we come to know that Allah ﷻ is ever-near and responsive. He hears the call of the caller wherever they maybe and answers it as and when he wills. Our Prayers may be invisible to us but through them, Allah ﷻ turns hardship into ease, impossible into possible and uncertainty into certainty. Thus the Second lesson we learn is in times of hardship and adversity a believer should turn to Allah ﷻ and ask from Him alone.

Moreover, this Hadith proves that doing good deeds is a way of simplifying matters, warding off harm and relieving hardships. So we should do our utmost best in doing as many good deeds as possible because this Hadeeth teaches that when a believer is in trouble, He should call upon Allah ﷻ, turn to Him and ask Him by virtue of his good deeds. These good deeds could be anything such as believing in the oneness of Allah ﷻ and His messenger ﷺ.

Through such du’aas Allah ﷻ out of His kindness and mercy, answers the supplication of the troubled, shows sympathy to His believing servants, and responds to their pleas.

Furthermore, this hadeeth is clear proof of the ayah;

And your Lord says, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you… (40:60)

Then further on Allah ﷻ says:

Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil… (27:62)

Those three men were troubled as a great hardship had befallen them. They supplicated to Allah ﷻ by virtue of their good deeds and He responded to their prayers and removed their hardship.

Lastly, we learn from the Hadith that being dutiful to one’s parents, abstaining from committing adultery, warning others against it, returning one’s trust and being sincere in actions is virtuous and a way of removing harm and hardship.

The Prophet ﷺ narrated this story because of the importance of it to his nation to benefit from it and learn good deeds from those who were before them.

To conclude, all we need to remember from everything we have learnt is that we, only need to ask. It is through Allah’s ﷻ power alone that we are blessed. But in order to be blessed we must Pray, believe and wait.

Is Voting Shirk?

All praise is due to Allah the Almighty, Lord of the worlds and may His peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

QUESTION>

Every year in England, we the Muslims are split on the issue of: “whether it is permissible or not to vote for man made laws” I ask this question as to whether it is permissible to vote for other then Allah’s laws, and does this lead to taghoot or shirk?

Are we only allowed to follow the shariah? The main argument is weather or not we are allowed to participate in this voting process?

<ANSWER>
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

The process of voting in non-Muslim democratic countries is not based on religious ideologies neither are elections won and lost on the basis of religion. As such, a candidate that stands up in an election does not promise to implement the laws of Islam or any other religion for that matter.

Normally a candidate promises the public better services and facilities. These services may also be connected to a particular religion, like promising Muslims financial assistance for the construction of Masjids, and so on.

Therefore, to vote a particular candidate or party in non-Muslim countries will be permissible and not considered a sin or Kufr. When one votes for a party, it does not necessarily mean that one agrees completely with their beliefs and ideologies, rather the intention is that the candidate (or party) will be of help to the whole community.

In light of the above, it becomes clear that to vote in itself is not something that is impermissible. However, the following should be kept in mind.

Voting in a way is giving a testimony in favour of the person/party whom one is voting. The way false testimony is a major sin, to vote in favour of a candidate that one knows is not worthy will also be unlawful and a major sin.

Allah Most High says:

“Allah commands you to render back your trusts to those whom they are due.” (Surah al-Nisa, 58)

He also says:

“When you speak, speak justly, even if a near relative is concerned.” (al-An’am, 152)

And:

“And shun the word that is false.” (al-Hajj, 30)

Bearing false testimony has been considered one of the major sins. Imam Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) included bearing false testimony in his famous book al-Kaba’ir, and then related the following Hadith:

“Shall I not inform you of the greatest sins (akbar al-kaba’ir): Associating partners with Allah (shirk), disobedience to parents, bearing false witness and speaking falsehood.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

When one is giving his vote, he is actually giving testimony on the fact that the candidate (or party) is trustworthy in his beliefs and actions, and better than the other candidates.

In a situation where there is no worthy candidate (as in non-Muslim countries, where at least the ideologies and beliefs of the relevant parties are contrary to the teachings of Islam), then the vote should be given to the one who is the better and more trustworthy than the other candidates.

Therefore, to give a vote on the purely basis of personal connections, family relationship, and the like (when one is aware that the one given the vote is not worthy) will be considered impermissible.

Vote should be given to the candidate that one believes will give people their rights, prevent oppression, and so on.

At times, voting becomes necessary. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said:

“If people see an oppressor and don’t prevent him, then it is very likely that Allah will include all of them in the punishment.” (Sunan Tirmidhi & Sunan Abu Dawud)

Therefore, if you see open oppression and transgression, and despite having the capability of preventing this oppression by giving your vote, you don’t do so, then in the light of this Hadith you will be sinful.

In another Hadith it is stated:

“If a believer is being humiliated in front of a individual, and he despite having the capability of preventing this humiliation, abstains from doing so, Allah will humiliate him (on the day of resurrection) in the presence of all the creation.” (Jam al-Fawa’id, 2/51)

In conclusion, voting is not something that is impermissible. If it is thought that a particular candidate or party will be of benefit to the general public in their day-to-day affairs, then the vote should be given to him. And by voting a particular party, it will not be considered that one agrees with all their ideologies and beliefs.

Do I really need a teacher?

All praise is due to Allah the Almighty, Lord of the worlds and may His peace and blessings be upon his final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

The great Maaliki scholar, Imaam Shaatbi (rahimahullah) [d. 790 A.H.] writes:
“The most effective and beneficial method of acquiring knowledge is to obtain it from its true bearers who possess it truly and completely.
People ask: “Is it possible to acquire knowledge without the medium of a teacher?”
While it is undoubtedly possible in the literal sense the scholars are unanimous that by and large, learning under a teacher is necessary and self-study is practically impossible.
They have also said: “Knowledge was in the hearts of men, then it moved to books; however its keys still lie in the hands of men (teachers).”
This statement advocates the necessity of acquiring knowledge from qualified teachers.
The proof of this is an authentic hadeeth of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam): “Indeed Allah Ta‘ala does not take away knowledge suddenly from the (hearts of the) people. Instead, He takes it by the demise of the ‘Ulama.”
Thus, qualified teachers are definitely the keys of knowledge and knowledge can only be acquired from them. This is also something extremely clear and logical.

Knowledge is Light

All praise is due to Allah the Almighty and may His peace and blessings be upon his final Prophet and Messenger Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

I recieved this a while back and thought it was quite interesting. The truth behind this matter is that when studying we focus so much on what is inside the book and we don’t really reflect on the meaning behind the little things.

Once a student sat with a teacher to read a text. As he opened the book, the teacher turned to him and said, “Have you ever asked yourself why the scholars use the word bāb (door) to title what you call chapters in English?”

The student responded, “Yes, but I did not give it a lot of thought.”

What followed was one of those special moments that can only happen when knowledge is passed from one heart to another:

“The word – bāb – is used because it reminds the student that he is entering a new realm. The realm of knowledge; that he is leaving a place of ignorance and entering into a place of understanding. Thus, he needs to have the proper character so the knowledge will touch his heart and mind.

“The word – bāb – is used because it reminds the student that, just as you enter a person’s home and are careful to make sure you have the right location, to knock with respect, to enter with humility, to sit gracefully, not complain about the food, if served, or the home, he has to seek knowledge, approach his teacher with humility and be satisfied with whatever is given to him, being thankful for what is given, polite and kind to his hosts.

“At the same time, it reminds the Shaykh to be gracious to his student, to treat him like his own, welcome him with a large heart and serve him the best he can, seeking God’s pleasure alone.

In short, this one word contains every Adab (etiquette) that Al-Ghazzali mentioned in the etiquette of the student and the etiquette of the teacher. Amazing! Truly amazing!!

“Finally, it reminds that student to be sincere, seeing God alone, since the bāb in the book reminds him of the doors (abwāb) of Paradise!

Journey to Taif

All praise is due to Allah the Almighty, the lord of the worlds and may His peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

For the past ten years since Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam had been blessed with prophet hood, he had been delivering the message of Islam to the people of Makkah without much success. Only some had accepted his call to tawheed and amongst the people of Makkah were a few who were kind-hearted and supported him even though they had not accepted Islam. However the rest of the people left no stone unturned in placing obstacles in his path and were always ready to prosecute him and his followers.

From the few who supported him without Imaan was Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam’s uncle Abu Talib, who passed away that year in the month of Rajab. That very same year in the month of Ramadhan, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam also lost his beloved wife Khadijah rd, who was always ready to accept his work, who supported him without any hesitation and who encouraged him when the people troubled and tortured him to give up his call to Islam. This year proved to be an extremely hard time for Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam for Khadijah rd was not only his wife. She was the pillar that kept him standing when he was troubled. She was the mother of his children and most importantly she believed in him when others did not.

In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad rahimullah it has been mentioned that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam once said: “She believed in me while people disbelieved in me. And she trusted in me while the people belied me. And she helped me and comforted me, in person and wealth, when the people would not. Allah provided me with children by her, and he did not with others”.

After her demise, he sallallahu alayhi wasallam was not seen for days and when people went to see how he was doing, they would see silent tears rolling down his beloved cheeks whilst he consoled his much-loved children. With both, Abu Talib and Khadijah rd, gone the disbelievers got a free-hand and therefore accelerated in torturing Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam without any thought. Hence this year was named Aamul Huzn- the year of sorrow.

At Taif, the next largest town in Hejaz, about 60 miles from Makkah, there lived a clan by the name of Banu Thaqeef who were strong in number. As the people of Makkah were not accepting Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam’s call to Islam and he was still suffering from the loss of his beloved wife and uncle, he left for Taif with hope of winning them over to the call of Islam. This would give the Muslim’s strength in numbers and establish a future base for the invitation towards Islam.

He sallallahu alayhi wasallam set out on foot in the month of Shawwal, in the year of Nabuwwah (End of May/Beginning of June 619 C.E.) with his freed slave Zaid bin Harithah. Upon reaching Taif, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam had a meeting with three chieftains of Thaqif, Abd Yalil, Mas’ood and habeeb and invited them towards Islam. However these unfortunate men not only refused to listen to anything he had to say, they also withheld any type of hospitality, they were extremely rude and let Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam verbally know that he was not welcome to stay in their town. One of them said “He is tearing the clothes of the Ka’bah! Is it true that Allah has sent you as a prophet?” The second said “Has Allah not found someone else to entrust him with his message?” and the third said: “I swear by Allah that I will never speak to you. If you are really the messenger of Allah, then you are too important to be speaking to me. If you are lying against Allah, then I should never speak to you”.

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam had not expected such behaviour from the heads of the clan. But due to his steadfast he did not accept defeat and instead decided to approach the common folk of the clan. For ten days he sallallahu alayhi wasallam delivered his message from Allah the Almighty. However just like their chiefs, they too treated him in an uncivilised manner and asked him to leave.

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam realized anymore effort would be in vain and so decided to leave. But these misfortunate people were not ready to let him go in peace and they set street urchins upon him, to trouble him and stone him.

They rained upon him stone after stone and the rahmatul lil aalameen sallallahu alayhi wasallam began to bleed so much that his shoes filled with blood. So much so that his shoes were stuck to his feet. He sallallahu alayhi wasallam would run, stumble and trip. Then he would get up again and the stones would rain down upon him once more. This happened repeatedly until Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam fell unconscious.

His servant Zaid bin Harithah rd was also hurt. He had blood flowing from his head trying to shield the messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam and when Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam fell unconscious he lifted the blessed body onto his shoulders and took shelter in a garden. He laid Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam under a grapevine and let Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam gain consciousness.

Unknown to Zaid rd this garden belonged to the enemy of Islam Utbah bin Rabiah, who later of led the army of Quraysh onto the battle field of Badr and who also held up the flag for the kuffar in this battle. He was an enemy yet when he saw the state of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, his heart melted and he said: “What have the people of Taif done to Muhammad? He who showed mercy to his enemies, we did not have mercy on him. We did not see the value of his tears”. He became so emotional that he went and broke off grapes from a bush and began to go towards Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. But he became shy. So he called his servant, Addas and said: Addas! Take this to that wounded man over there and say to him that I said, I take an oath of our relationship! Do not turn away this plate from yourself”.

Addas came and presented the grapes. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam took a grape, put it to his mouth and said “Bismillah”. Upon hearing this, Addas exclaimed: “what are these words? The people here do not use these words”. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam smiled and asked him: “Where are you from?” He replied: “Nineveh”.  Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said “I see! So you’re from the land of my brother Yunus”! Surprised, Addas said: “How do you know about yunus?” Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied: “I am a prophet of Allah and so was he. So Addas began to kiss his forehead and his hands and his feet and he accepted Islam.

Upon his acceptance Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam forgot about the pain of his wounds. He lifted his hands towards the heavens and he cried out: “Oh my lord! Should I not complain to you? Who did you submit me to? Such people that this is my state. You know what has become of me, what is hidden from you?!”

Hearing this the seven skies began to shake and throne of Allah the Almighty began to tremble and within seconds jibraeel as came down with the angel of mountains. He, the angel of the mountains said: “Assalaamu’alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh Oh Rasulullah! Command us Oh messenger of Allah and we will crush these people between the two mountains.

But Allah the Almighty had sent down Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam as a mercy for mankind. He said “No! They did not but maybe someone from their lineage will accept Islam. I have not been sent as a punishment. I have been sent as a mercy. I have not been sent to curse people. I have been sent as a mercy.” Such was the mercy of Muhammad bin Abdullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam that upon hearing this the angels of the skies began to cry.

Then Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was then refreshed and with hope in Allah the Almighty and fresh determination he returned to Makkah Mukarramah.

Lessons learnt

1) From the story of Addas rd the greatest lesson we learn is that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam never generalised. To him every person he met, every individual he saw, was a potential Muslim and a potential good person. It did not matter whether this person was a believer or a non-believer, a saint or a sinner. Every person was treated as an equal and this is exactly how we should treat those around us. Don’t judge a person for they may not look like they have much good in them but Allah the Almighty may have plans that we know nothing of…

2) Another great lesson to be learnt is that we must bare patience over what befalls us. Allah the Almighty says in his Qur’aanul Kareem:

So be patient with gracious patient. (70:5)

And then again in another place He says:

Oh you who have believed! Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed Allah is with the patient. (2:153)

Allah the Almighty asks us to be patient and he will be with us. Just like how He was with Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam at every difficult moment in his life. He went through hardship. But then came ease. So just be patient over what is passing you by. If you make patient as it should be done then Allah the Almighty will definitely be with you.

3) It has been related in Tirmidhi that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has said: “Have mercy on those on the earth and the one in the heavens will have mercy on you”.

Allah the Almighty has said in his glorious Qur’aan:

And we have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a mercy for the worlds. (21:107)

And what amazing mercy did Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam show to the people of Taif. They verbally abused him, showed him no hospitality, stoned him and bloodied him. They showed him no mercy yet he sallallahu alayhi wasallam showed mercy to them. If he wanted to he could’ve commanded the angel to crush them between the two mountains but instead he wished them well and made du’aa for them. So though you may go through rough patches with people forgive them. Make du’aa for them. This is better for our peace of mind no matter how hard it is to do at times.

4) Lastly, after all the trouble Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam went through for us, it is out right upon him to send as much durood as possible. Be it once a day or a hundred, send him as many as possible. Make it part of your daily life. Be it when you go to sleep, wake up, iron, cook, clean, work, send as much as possible because He sallallahu alayhi wasallam truly deserves it.

May Allah the Almighty send upon Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam as much salutations and blessings as he deserves. Ameen.

Fourteen advices for Scholars and Teachers.

All praise is for Allah swt alone, lord of the worlds and may his peace and blessings be upon his final messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

Assalaamu’alaykum.w.w.

I pray that each and every one of you is in the best of health, wealth and Imaan. Ameen.

My respected brother/sister in Islam, before you read this post I would like to kindly request that you make no comment without thinking into the matter which you may want to criticise. There are times when we seem to think that what our Ulama have said is said without thought. However, we must remember that we are talking about the Ahlullah, who think deep and hard before making  any statement that may hurt their Aakhirah. My advice is most importantly advice to myself first and then to everyone else.

Fourteen advices for Ulama’ and Asatidha By Mufti Mahmood al-Hasan Gangohi

When Mufti Mahmood al-Hasan Gangohi (Allah have mercy on him) sent his beloved student, Mufti Ahmad Khanpuri (Allah protect him) to Dhabel to teach, he gave him 14 advices which is a great lesson for all teachers.

They are as follows:

1. Don’t look out for position and status. For example, do not demand to teach a certain book or ask to be posted to a certain position.

2. Don’t ever ask for money i.e. do not ask for a particular amount as a salary or demand an increase in salary.

3. If someone tells you that you are not worthy of something then accept it and think in your heart that really I am not worth anything. The madrasah authorities have seated me in this place. I make du’a that Allah grants me the ability to teach these books.

4. If any student asks you a question, answer him with compassion even though the intent of his question is to insult you.

5. If you do not understand any section in your book, perform two rak’ah salah al- hajah and engage in fervent du’a. Thereafter send some isal al-thawab for the author of the book provided the author is a Muslim.

6. Refrain from explaining to the students the lessons of a book that is taught by another teacher.

7. Don’t take personal service from the students. Mawlana Ashraf ‘Ali Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him) used to say that I regard it as haram (forbidden) on myself to take khidmat (service) from any of my students or murids (disciples).

8. Don’t mix around too much with the students. Many of them have their own personal agendas.

9. Be thankful to the students for having presented to you the farms of their hearts to sow the seeds of your ‘ilm (knowledge). Otherwise your ‘ilm would have remained untouched. Don’t ever feel that you are doing them a favour.

10. Students ask questions for different reasons. Some ask to show their capability and position whilst others ask just to irritate the ustadh. Answer every question positively and with wisdom. Don’t answer in a debating manner.

11. Daily recite Surah Ikhlas three times and send the rewards to the authors of the books that you are teaching, provided they are Muslims.

12. If you said something incorrect in the class don’t hesitate to retract your statement.

13. Don’t ever teach any book without muta’lah (preparation).

14. Don’t miss out your ma’mulat, zikr, tasbih and tilawah because of your commitment to teaching.

When all else fails, HOPE remains!

All praise is due to Allah swt, the lord of the worlds and may His peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

Assalaamu’alaykum.w.w.
I received this a while back and thought it was beautiful, so decided to share.
There are times in our lives when our level of Imaan is low, our Khushoo ( spiritual concentration/connection) in Salaah wavers and we feel a drop in our connection with Allah swt?

We feel like our du’aas are not being answered, our Salaah is not having a positive impact on our hearts,  and worst of all the feeling that we’re horrible human beings, that Allah swt does not love us or does not care about us anymore!

Surah Ad-Duha (surah 93) was revealed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam to relieve him of these negative feelings and to give him hope, positivity, and the assurance that Allah swt was with him no matter what.

From it we too can find peace, hope, and a renewed faith in Allah swt when we go through similar states of depression, sadness, and hopelessness.

So what does this surah say?

Wad duhaa— By the morning brightness.

This is the first thing you need to hear when you’re depressed: Wake up, look at the sunshine! Everything in life is not doom and gloom– you just have to look up.
Wal layli izha sajaa— And [by] the night when it covers with darkness.

Why is this ayah immediately talking about darkness? As a reminder to us that the night is meant to cover and give us comfort and rest. Generally when we’re not happy with ourselves, we tend to get into a very bad sleep pattern by staying up at night and sleeping all day thereby worsening our state of mind. This ayah reminds us to use the night as a comfort to ease our distress.

Ma wad da’aka rabbuka wa ma qalaa— Your Lord ( Oh Muhammad) has neither forsaken you nor hates you.

This is a very powerful verse from Allah swt telling us that He does not hate us and has not forgotten us– reminding the depressed person that He is always by his or her side!

Walal-aakhiratu khairul laka minal-oola— And the Hereafter is better for you than the present (life of this world).

Many times when we’re depressed we think: Is this all my life is going to be? Is it never going to get better?

This aayah serves as a perfect answer to those questions, reminding us that life in this world is temporary and that Aakhirah is certainly a better, more permanent place for us than this world could ever be.

This makes us look forward to attaining our place in Jannah and helps us look at any problems in our lives as temporary tests of our faith from Allah swt.

Wa la sawfa y’uteeka rabbuka fatarda— And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be well pleased.

A promise from Allah swt that very soon he will give us a massive reward (Jannah) and we will be happy. Subhanallah!

Isn’t this the best thing to hear when you’re sad and fed up with this worldly life and the problems you’re facing?

The birth of Rahmatul lil Aalameen sallahu alayhi wasallam

Here it is! The birth of Rahmatul lil Aalameen sallallahu alayhi wasallam rewritten! Super excited to share it with you all. I pray you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

During the Islamic month of Rabi-ul-Awwal, many people debate about whether it is permissible to celebrate the birth of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam or not. Some people celebrate Miladun Nabee (the birth of the prophet) to the extent that they give extravagant parties and spend large amounts of money in the name of the birth of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam without any thought to the laws pertaining to Shariah.

Instead of spending so much time and money unnecessarily, is it not better to learn about the seerah of that one being who showed humanity how to live a life of piety and simplicity?

Hence related to the subject at hand, how much do we know about the birth of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam?

According to a majority of the Islamic historians Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born in the year of the elephants when Abraha came to destroy the ka’bah.

There are six different of opinions on which month Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born in. 1) Muharram 2) Safar 3) Rabi-ul-Awwal 4) Rabi-uth-Thani 5) Rajab 6) Ramadhan. However a majority of the scholars unanimously agree that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born in the month of Rabi-ul-Awwal.

The day on which Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born, was a Monday. According Hafiz Ibn Katheer, who was a great muhaddith and historian, he says that this is a unanimously agreed fact. This is evident from a Hadeeth of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Narrated in Muslim Shareef:

 On the authority of Abu Qatadah (rd) in which he says that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was asked regarding the fast of Monday and he replied; “It is the day I was born and it is the day when the first revelation was sent upon me.”

There is also a difference of opinion on which date Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born. The most common belief is the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal. However, scholars have given preference to the 9th of Rabi-ul-awwal.

Having noted down most of what Moulana Tariq Jameel sahib has said, I have gone in accordance to the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal as he has recorded dates which coincide with this date.

Now to answer the question, what actually happened on the day that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born.

The English date was the 21st of April. It was the night of Sunday and the old leader Abdul Muttalib was sitting by the ka’bah, praying to Allah swt;

“Oh Allah! Give life to a sign of Abdullah’s. Grant his wife  a boy. Not a girl, a boy, so that a sign of Abdullah’s remains in this world. Abdullah died very young so leave a part of him in this world so this child “a boy” may carry on his lineage.”

Little did Abdul Muttalib know what Allah swt had destined for this Ummah!

The next day, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal, 22nd of April 571AD, subah sadiq, 4.20am, the year of the elephants. At the house of Amena bint Wahab, the midwife, Shifa’ bint Amr (rd), the mother of Abdur Rahman bin Auf (rd) who later embraced Islam, was doing her job as a midwife. She took the child out and what she saw surprised her because this child was like no other she had seen before.

Normally when a child is born, it is covered in blood and dirt and is in need of cleaning. The child’s umbilical cord is in need of cutting and a boy needs to be circumcised. However when this child, Muhammad bin Abdullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, was born he was clean and pure and was already washed, his umbilical cord was already cut and his circumcision had already been done.

Now Shifa bint Amr was very troubled. Here she was, a midwife, whose job was to do these things when a child is born, yet this child’s arrival into this world was like no other.

She handed the child over to his mother, Amena bint Wahab. This child was no more than half an hour old. Yet all of a sudden it was as if a super natural power came from within and he rolled over on to the floor and done a full prostration like an adult. He done one long sajdah and then he lifted his head, leaned on this left hand and raised his shahadah finger towards the heavens and the entire universe lit up with noor (light). His mother, Bibi Amena says “I began to wonder upon the palaces of Yemen, Syria, Rome, Iran and Persia because when he lifted his finger it was as if the light of the entire world was shining upon me.”

This child then put his finger down and the light went out and the baby then became content in his sleep like any other new-born.

Bibi Amena then took her child into her lap and naturally she began to worry about what had just happened to her child. But Allah swt was not yet done showing the miracles of this baby. Allah swt bought forth another of his great signs and it would seem as if the roof of the house split open and a cloud entered through it. This cloud then spread throughout the room and the space in which the child was resting upon his mother’s lap became more intimate and Bibi Amena says “it felt as if the child was no longer in her lap.”

Thereafter an announcer announced from within the cloud and said “Turn this child towards the east and turn this child towards the west and turn this child all around, so that the world may see who this is, what exactly he is and why he has come.”

“Recognise him! This is he who the world, the whole of mankind, was waiting for. This is he for whose arrival, the Anbiya (as) were looking out for. For whom the darkest places in the world kept on waiting for. For whom the darkest places of the universe were waiting for. He will bring forth light from darkness. He will come and he will teach about the oneness of Allah swt. He will come and he will erase the work of kufr and shirk. He will come and he will change darkness to light. He will come and change hatred into love. He will come and there will be peace instead of war and he will show the success of gaining the pleasure of Allah swt. He will show the ways. He will show Jannah and he will show Jahannam.”

Then the speaker spoke again and he said “Give him the manners of Adam (as). Give him the recognition of Sheeth (as). Give him the heroism of Nuh (as). Give him the friendship of Ibraheem (as). Give him the sacrifice of Isma’eel (as). Give him the fluency of speech of Saleh (as). Give him the wisdom of Lut (as). Give him the pleasure of Is’haaq (as). Give him the glad tidings of Ya’qoob (as). Give him the beauty of Yusuf (as). Give him the might of Musa (as). Give him the struggle of Yusha (as). Give him the love of Daaniyaal (as). Give him the honour of Ilyaas (as). Give him the voice of Dawood (as). Give him the the obedience of Yunus (as). Give him the the fate of Yahya (as). Give him the the devotion of Esa (as) and whatever has been put into all the prophets put it into this child.”

To look at this child he would seem an orphan but what happened to the world around him on the day that he was born?

As if for the signs of Allah swt, his birth alone was not enough, the fires that had been kept going for the past 1000 years, in the palaces of Persia, extinguished. The fires that were kept lit in the places of worship blew out. The 40 stakes that upheld the grand palace of Persia broke and all the idols of the world broke into pieces. A voice came from within the broken pieces and said “Our time has come to an end and the era of the last prophet has come”. Allah swt sent the Hoors of Jannah and the Angels of the sky to Makkah Mukarramah to welcome this child into this world. During that year in happiness of this child’s arrival, every woman who gave birth was blessed with a boy. Even the fishes in the sea congratulated one another on his arrival.

And thus the greatest man that ever lived, Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib sallallahu alayhi wasallam was born.

It is not my words that have given praise and beauty to the most beloved of Allah swt, but rather it is Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam who has given beauty to my words.

Who am I You Must Gain?

All praise is due to Allah swt, the lord of the worlds and may His peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
I am a source of communication,
To which you must show dedication.

To acquire me, you must pay a price,
For I am no game of dice.
Believe me! Your time, you must sacrifice,
For just a little commitment, will not suffice.

From the time of Adam, to this day,
In minds, in books, on screens I must remain.
For though it is sad to say,
Your youth today, use me without any gain.

Listen well my friend!
You know not your end!
It is my lord, who you must serve,
and through him, me, you must preserve.

To understand me You must seek me,
And keep me,
For Whilst the Ulama use me So that the Ummah may survive,
Some of your laymen use it to divide.

Jannah or Jahannam, it is for you to choose.
I am your source of salvation,
or your source of deprivation.

You will find me with your pious,
not within the palace.
In the masaajid you may teach me,
In the madaris you will definitely find me.

The knowledge of Deen is my answer,
The light of which is only given by the well-wisher.
