The Katibah.

Hell- That Subject We All Avoid!

All praise is due to Allah ﷻ, Lord of the worlds and May His peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.

The subject I am going to talk about today is one that we all wish to avoid. We love talking about the nice things in life and we love thinking about the happy endings. But we were sent on to this earth, we were given this life, as a test from Allah ﷻ and this is something we tend to forget, especially when we get into our busy life styles.

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’aanul Kareem:

And I did not create Jinn and Mankind except to worship Me. (51:56)

The result of every test is either good or bad and in regards to our religious matters; if the outcome is good then we will spend the rest of our hereafter in Jannah (Paradise). But if the outcome is bad then, Allah forbid, we will spend eternity in the fire of Jahannam (Hell). We seek protection in Allah ﷻ from the punishments of the hereafter.

One of the best ways to remember the purpose of our life is to think about Jannah and Jahannam because this is something that will always keep us on track.


By remembering that Jannah is our goal and Jahannam is something that we are have not been created for and is something that we need to avoid.

A Saheeh hadith reported by At-Tirmidhi narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (Rd) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“When Allah created Paradise and Hell, He sent Jibraeel (As) to Paradise and said, ‘Look at it and at what I have prepared for its people therein.’ So he went and looked at it and at what Allah had prepared for its people therein. Then he went back to Him and said, ‘By Your Glory, no one will hear of it but he will enter it.’(Meaning its pleasures, its comforts, its enjoyments and its untold blessings are so intense that there will be nobody who, after knowing and believing, will not try their utmost best for admission into it.) Then He commanded that it should be surrounded with difficult things. (Meaning Allah ﷻ then surrounded Jannah with hardships and made it compulsory to display Imaan and Taqwah, perform regular Salaah, give Zakaah, observe fasting during Ramadan, partake in Jihad, perform Hajj, display love for all those around you, obedience to parents etc., as a condition for admission into Jannah)  Then He said, ‘Go back and look at what I have prepared for its people therein.’ Jibraeel (As) went back and saw that it was surrounded with difficult things. He came back and said, ‘By Your Glory, I am afraid that no one will enter it.’ (Meaning hardly anybody will be able to enter it).’ Allah said, ‘Go and look at Hell and see what I have prepared for its people therein.’  (He saw it) with parts of it consuming other parts. He came back and said, ‘By Your Glory, no one who hears of it will enter it.’ (Meaning if anyone comes to know of the conditions in Jahannam they will do everything possible never to go near it).  So Allah commanded that it should be surrounded with desires. (Meaning that Allah ﷻ then surrounded Jahannam with acts of indulgence, such as Shirk, Fitnah, lying and back-biting, adultery and fornication, drinking, cruelty and disrespect towards parents, stealing, Interest, pride and disregard of the Divine Commandments etc.) Then he said, ‘Go back to it.’ So Jibraeel (As) went back, then he said, ‘By Your Glory, I am afraid that no one will be saved from it and that all will enter it.’”

I am not going to relate to you every sinful act that will land a person in the hell-fire.

But Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’aanul Kareem:

And remind, for surely, the reminder profits the believers. (51:55)

The only thing a believer needs to keep himself on the right track is a reminder. He does not need to visualise anything nor does he need to use his other senses to feel anything because a reminder will be enough.

Again, in another place Allah ﷻ mentions:

Verily, We have mentioned every type of example for people in this Qur’aan so that they may take heed. (39:27)

So every type of disobedience that will lead a person towards the wrong path has already been mentioned in the Qur’aan so that we may think over it and we may learn a lesson from it.

The Qur’aan mentions the fire in many different words. For example: Azhanan Naar- Punishment of the Fire, Azhaabal Hareeq- Punishment of the Burning Fire, Azhaabas sa’eer- Punishment of the Flaming Fire, Azhaabal Ja’heem- Punishment of the Blazing Fire and Azhaabas samoom- Punishment of the Scorching Fire.

However, the one thing that all of these have in common is that this Fire is a place of misery and grief and sorrow and it is full of torments and troubles far beyond the imagination of the human being.

Distress, dismay and destruction await the person thrown in and happiness and joy is unknown. Death will be sacrificed in the form of a Ram and so even for a person who wishes for death over Fire will have no hope.

Allah ﷻ says in Surah Ra’d (13), Ayah 35:

The example of Paradise, which the righteous have been promised, is (that) beneath it rivers flow. Its fruit is lasting, and its shade. That is the consequence for the righteous, and the consequence for the disbelievers is the Fire.

In this verse, as in other places, the Fire is compared with the Gardens of Paradise, as Misery is compared with Bliss. We can also imagine other incidents in contrast with those of the Garden, e.g. with the Fire will be drought, waterlessness and thirst, instead of beautiful rivers; pain and suffering, instead of everlasting delight; no protection against the fierceness of the heat, as contrasted with the cool shades ever deepening as you proceed further into Jannah.

Rasulullah ﷺ has said: “Almighty Allah has prepared for His righteous slaves what no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, and no heart has imagined.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Think for a second, that if the rewards and the blessings of Jannah are such that the human being cannot even begin to imagine what it is like and Jahannam is totally the opposite of Jannah, then what must Jahannam be like? Jahannam in other words, is a place of such suffering and despair that no eye ever seen and no ear has ever heard of and no heart has ever imagined.

It is said that Jahannam was fanned for a thousand years till it became quite red, then it was fanned for a further thousand years till it became white, and then again it was fanned for another thousand years till it became black and it is now at this stage, that the colour of it just black and dark with the redness of its flames.

Allah ﷻ mentions in the Qur’aanul Kareem:

On the Day We shall ask Jahannam, “Are you full?” and it will reply, “Are there any more?” (50:30)

From this verse we understand that on the day of Judgement, when every person that breathed on this earth will have been accounted for and the dwellers of Jahannam will have been thrown in, even then there will be so much space that when asked, Jahannam will ask if there are any more to be thrown in. The mind cannot even begin to comprehend how vast this place must be.

As if the verse is not enough to make one understand how immense Jahannam is, it has been mentioned that there are seventy thousand valleys in Jahannam with seventy six thousand hillocks in each valley.

Amongst them is a valley called Jabal e Hazan from which this section of Jahannam seeks refuge seventy times a day from the intensity of the punishment and the heat.

It has  also been mentioned in the Mishkaat-ul-Masabeeh that the fire of this world that Allah ﷻ blessed humanity with originated from just one single flame of Jahannam that had to be washed seventy times before it was brought down to earth.

Just one drop of the stench of Jahannam is enough to kill the entire human race and the fire, which awaits the dwellers, is seventy times more severe than anything similar to it in this world.

Jahannam, just like Jannah, has seven stages and each stage has its own type of punishment in accordance to the deeds of its inhabitants. This is evident from Surah Hijr (15), Ayah 44 in which Allah ﷻ says;

It (Jahannam) has seven gates, to each gate, therein, belongs an appointed portion of them.

Of these gates, The First is called Jahannam, as Allah ﷻ mentions in many verses in the Qur’aan;

In Surah Tawbah (9), Ayah 81 Allah ﷻ says:

Those who were left behind the Rasool of Allah (who stayed behind in Madinah Munawwarah when Rasulullah ﷺ marched with the Muslim army to Tabook) are pleased with their sitting behind him. They detest striving in Allah’s path with their wealth and their lives, saying (to others and each other), “Do not proceed in the heat!” Tell them! “The fire of Jahannam is much more intense in heat (69 times more intense than the fire of this world).” If only they understood. (If only they understood that the heat of Jahannam is unbearable and everlasting, they would not fear the temporary heat of this world which is bearable.)

The Second Gate is called Lazhaa (The Churning Fire), as Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’aanul Kareem, in Surah Ma’aarij (70) Ayaat 15 and 16;

This will never be! (No ransom will be accepted and none will be made to suffer for another.) The fire shall certainly be the churning fire.

(So hot that it will be capable of easily) Tearing off the scalp.

The Third gate is called Al Hutamah (The Crusher), as mentioned in Surah Humazah (104), from Ayaat 3 to 9. Allah ﷻ says:

He (foolishly) thinks that his wealth will keep him alive forever.

Never! (This will never be so! He will soon have to die and then) He will surely be thrown into the Crusher. (Which crushes everything thrown in)

And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

It is Allah’s kindled fire (of Jahannam)

Which (is so intense, that it even) penetrates the hearts. (The pain of which is much more severe than any other because of the delicate nature of the heart)

Indeed, it (Hellfire) will be closed down upon them (So that they cannot escape).

In extended columns. (The flames of Jahannam will raise high above the people like massive pillars, which they will never be able to pass)

The Fourth Gate is called Sa’eer (The Blazing Fire). Allah ﷻ says in Surah Shuraa (42), Ayah 7:

And in this manner (as We have been sending revelation to you, o Rasulullah ﷺ) did We reveal the Arabic Qur’an to you so that you may warn the (inhabitants of the) Mother of Cities (Makkah) and those around her and so that you may warn them about the Day of gathering (the day of Qiyamah), about which there is no doubt. (Once judgement is passed on the day of Qiyamah,) A group (the Mu’mineen) shall be in Jannah and a group (the Kuffaar) in the Blaze.

Allah also says about the people of Sa’eer in Surah Mulk (67), Ayaat 10 and 11;

And they will say, “If only we had been listening (To the warnings of the Anbiya) or reasoning (Made an effort to understand what the Anbiya told us), we would not be amongst the companions of the Blaze.”
(saying) they will confess their sin (their disbelief), so away with the inhabitants of the Blaze (from Allah’s mercy).

The fifth Gate is called Saqar (the scorching Fire), as Allah says in Surah Muddathir (74), Ayaat 26 to 30:

I will admit him into Saqar.

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

It neither spares (anyone) nor leaves (anyone without injury).

It distorts the body. (It burns away the flesh, scorching the surface of the skin)

Over it are nineteen (angels).

Then again in Surah Muddathir, Ayaat 40 – 47 Allah ﷻ mentions the inhabitants of Saqar. He says:

(Who will be) in gardens, questioning each other,

About the criminals,

(And asking them), “What put you into Saqar?”

They will say, “We were not of those who prayed (Performed Salaah),

Nor did we used to feed the poor.

And we used to be absorbed (in finding ways to oppose Islam) with those who were absorbed,

And we used to deny the Day of Reckoning.

Until there came to us the certainty.” (Only then we realised the error of our ways, but it was too late.)

So there are a total of four things that they were guilty of, which ultimately landed them in this level of the hell:

The First: They did not offer salaah (i.e. prayer)

The Second: They did not feed the poor.
The Third: They used to indulge in falsehood and used it to argue unjustly against the truth.
The Fourth: They used to deny and reject the Day of Resurrection

Hence from this we understand this level of Hell has been made for these people.

The sixth Gate is called Jaheem (the Blazing fire), as Allah ﷻ mentions in Surah Haqqah, Ayaat 30-34. Allah ﷻ says;

(Addressing the angels of punishment, Allah ﷻ will say), “Seize him (one bound for Jahannam) and shackle him.

Then into Hellfire drive him.

Then fasten him in a chain (long) seventy cubits in length.” (A cubit in the Akhirah is immensely longer than a cubit of this world.)

Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah , the Most Great,

Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.

From these verses we are able to understand that Jaheem is for two kinds of people in particular.

The First: He who did not have the correct belief in Allah ﷻ.
The Second: Let alone spending in charity himself and feeding the poor, the person who did not even encourage the feeding of the poor.

The Seventh and last gate is called Al Haawiyah (the Abyss), as Allah says in Surah Qaari’ah, Ayaat 8-11;

But as for one whose scales are light (in good deeds and heavy with evil doings),

His refuge will be the Haawiyah*.

And what can make you know what that is?

It is a Fire, intensely hot.

*In some Ahadeeth it has been mentioned that casting a stone into this pit of Haawiyah will take seventy years to reach its bottom.

As for the foods of Jahannam; Allah ﷻ talks about it in various places in the Qur’aan. Allah ﷻ says in Surah Saaffaat 37, Ayaat 62-68:

Is it (the bounties of Jannah) better hospitality or the tree of Zaqqoom?

We have certainly made it (the tree of Zaqqoom) a test (appointed) for the oppressors.

It (Zaqqoom) is a tree that emerges from the depths of Jahannam.

Its emerging fruits as if it was the heads of the devils.

Certainly, they will eat from it and fill their bellies with.

Thereafter they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

Then indeed (after eating and drinking), their return will be to the blazing fire (of Jahannam, where the punishment will resume).

So addressing the Kuffaar, who mocked Rasulullah ﷺ by saying that a tree cannot grow in the fire of Jahannam, Allah ﷻ tells them that it is indeed a tree which has grown from the roots of Jahannam and it will be bitter in taste but the inhabitants of Jahannam will be forced to eat it due to their intense hunger. It will be such a tree that will make them feel thirsty and so they will be given boiling hot water to drink which will be so hot that it will tear their intestines to shreds.

Allah ﷻ then mentions in Surah Saad (38), Ayaat 57-58:

This – so let them taste it – is scalding water and Ghassaaq (Pus which will flow from the wounds of the inhabitants after they have been thrown in).

And other (punishments) of its type (in various) kinds.

Then Allah ﷻ says in Surah Dukhaan (44), Ayaat 43-46:

Indeed, the tree of Zaqqoom (like cactus).

Is food for the sinful.

Like murky oil, it boils within the bellies.

Like the boiling of scalding water.

Allah ﷻ then mentions in Surah Waaqi’ah (56), Ayah 93:

He will be served boiling water.

Then in Surah Haqqah (69) Ayaat 35- 37, Allah ﷻ mentions:

So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend (to assist him)

Nor any food except from Ghisleen ( the pus and blood oozing from the wounds of the people of Jahannam);

None will eat it except the sinners.

Then Allah ﷻ says in Surah Naba’ (78) Ayaat 21-30:

‘Truly Hell is a place of ambush. (where the angels are lying in wait to punish the wrong doers)
For the transgressors a place of return.
They will abide therein for an extremely long period of time.
(without their punishment coming to an end)
They taste therein neither anything cool, Nor any drink.
Except boiling water and ghassaaq.
An exact recompense
(according to their crimes).
Indeed they were not expecting an account.
And adamantly rejected our Ayaat.
We have meticulously recorded everything in the book
(their book of deeds). (So they will not be able to deny anything and will be punished for every sin).
(They will be told) Now Taste (the punishment)! (Do not plead for respite because) We shall increase you only in punishment (your punishment can only get worse, not better).

Then again Allah ﷻ says in Surah Ghaashiyah (88), Ayaat 4-7:

He shall enter the intensely hot fire.

Where he will be given water to drink from a boiling spring.

For them there will be no food except from Daree’ (a poisonous, thorny tree.)

Which will neither nourish (their bodies) nor satisfy (their extreme) hunger.

From these verses we come to know that the foods of hell shall be Zaqqoom, Ghisleen and Daree’ and the drinks will be Hameem and Ghassaaq.

And Allah ﷻ in all his wisdom and might has mentioned in his Qur’aanul Kareem, Surah Ma’idah, Ayah 9;

Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds (that) for them there is forgiveness and great reward.
